After way too much time, I’m finally reading The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. It came out 3 years ago to a truckload of acclaim, and Rex and Chloe have both read it and love it, but for some reason I’ve put it off. It won the Pulitzer and I put it off. We saw Junot Diaz “in conversation” last year in San Jose and absolutely loved him, and I put it off. What’s the deal??? Well … last night I read the first 20 pages and am already totally sucked into this story. I love the voice and structure that Diaz uses — something I thought would bug me, but is completely charming and funny, funny, funny. The narrator is original and so is Diaz’s subject matter. Yes, it’s true. I’ve never read a story about a “sweet but disastrously overweight ghetto nerd” and I’m happy to be reading it now. Finally.
