On the opening pages of Franzen’s Freedom

I finally got going with this book.  It took sitting in one place for an hour or so and giving this story a chance to get off the ground, meaning I needed to read the whole first section without a break to get the rhythm of it.  It’s that kind of book:  smart, weaving, complex, a bunch of characters to get into your head.  The opening section starts off sleepy and builds to a crescendo.  I’m hoping to keep going today.

If you’re looking for an interesting interview with Mr. Franzen, this is a good one at The Guardian.

Happy reading!
