Cutting for Stone (update)

The Bad News:  I’m having a hell of time getting into this book.  All I’ve heard is how fabulous it is, how beloved the story, how heartbreaking.  I’m waiting, still waiting, to feel that way.  I hope it hits me soon or it’s going to be a long week.

The Good News:  I’ve shoved my stack of books aside to concentrate on finishing this one.  Yesterday I did (shame on me) drop into Borders to pick up Siobhan Fallon’s new book.  I read the first 6 pages and  — reluctantly — closed the cover and put it away.  CUTTING FOR STONE it is.  If I’m going to see Mr. Verghese (which I am on Feb 17) I want to have finished his book first.

Ya know, I have to say I’m sick and tired of books that take a 50-80 page warm-up to get going. Not exactly what they taught us at MFA school, is it?

It’s about 650 page, so I’m telling myself I need to give it time….

The memory that forges me on is LONESOME DOVE. It took me 150 pages to get into that book, but I’d promised Rex I would stick with it. 800+ pages later, I was sorry to see it end. I wanted to cry, that’s how sorry. Can you imagine?

I’ll qualify this by saying I don’t like cowboy books and I don’t watch Westerns on TV, but LONESOME DOVE remains, 15 years later, one of my best reading experiences. Man I loved that book.
