Seeing Averil

You can't see us, but we're right here, on this beach. Really, we are.

I’m just back from seeing our brilliant, lovely, treasured Averil at the beach.  Lucky me!  I don’t have photos to prove it.  Sorry.  But remember I am not one of the talented photographers in our crew and so was smart enough to leave my camera at home (accidentally on purpose).  Here’s how things went, in a list, of course.

1.  It was like meeting up with an old friend, all joy and comfort, excited calm, and let’s-get-there-already so we can visit.  We headed down the steep sand hill, my dog Lea running crazy excited circles all around, and settled onto an old blanket and blue beach towels.

2.  Sweatshirts required.  It was a cool 57 degrees, breezy and overcast.  No blue sky in sight.  No sun.  Windblown hair, two pairs of naked feet, perfectly polished toes digging in the sand.  A perfect setting, maybe, for a story?

3.  What happens when 2 of Betsy‘s posse meet for the first time?  They talk about our beloved Betsy, of course!  And the playground at Betsy’s.  The best playground in town.

4.  Over a 4 hour period we covered every topic on tap, including but not limited to:  friends, husbands, mothers, children, dogs, extended families, writers, fiction, memoir, research, genre, the writing life, pseudonyms, exposure, writing in a chair, writing on a bed, quieting the noise, chasing the idea, working in an office and not working, education, past lives, dream lives, staying put and relocating, the desert, the rain, growing up, figuring it out, feeling lost, getting lost, finding what you’re good at, trying, failing, what success looks like, the future … and that’s the short list.

5.  Photos were taken.  Photos were taken with good old fashioned film.  But you’ll have to wait for Averil to get home from her adventures (next week?) for evidence.  Be patient.  She’s off having a grand adventure.

6.  Morning became mid-afternoon.  A few tiny raindrops.  A husband called saying it was time to hit the road.  Lea had eaten too much sand.  Averil and me?  Our pants were salt-water-wet halfway to our knees, toe polish rubbed dull by the sand, hair a tangled, beautiful mess.  One last trudge back up the steep white hill.  The last hug goodbye.

I’m so jealous. The internet is a strange place, I have no idea what Averil looks like, but I think I know what her voice might sound like. The photo of you on your blog looks just like my neighbor VIcky, although when you posted photos (from a meeting with AmyG? I can’t remember), I realized you look NOTHING like my neighbor Vicky. So all I have in my head is a vision of my neighbor Vicky and a faceless voice on the beach together. That will have to suffice until photos are posted. xo J.

Jess, I hear I look like everyone’s sister, childhood friend, etc… so this does not surprise me! I’m serious. And however you imagine Averil’s voice, that’s her voice. She’s so damned smart and funny and thoughtful. (which is, of course, not news to anyone)

Okay, this will not surprise you in the least, but I am also the “aren’t you…” person. I’ve had people come up to me talking to me before realizing I wasn’t whoever it was.

Isn’t there something disturbing about having that face that is “just like” someone else’s? When it isn’t??

My favorite part about your visit is that in this time when we’re all winding down in order to wind up, summer coming, housecleaning needing to be done, my favorite, favorite part is that photos were taken with film…ahhhh…

There is something so right about that. I hope you went home and wrote on paper. Seems rather full circle, no?

Film. Paper. Last week I ordered real live stationery. Real paper, with my name embossed, paper I will write on and stamp and mail. Ahhhhhh….

Others may try to twitterize you. For my part, I’m pushing you towards a beautiful fountain pen to write on that stationary. One cannot have your dining room/library and write with a Bic. No. Stationary demands it.

Oh I’m so glad for both of you . (and yes, jealous, I can admit that too.)

Four hours! Wonderful, but I bet it flew by.

I’m trying to wrangle an iPhone from our hotel room (we made it all the way to Redding last night!) to tell the posse how completely freaking fabulous our Teri is. Drop-dead gorgeous, with the world’s most perfect nose and an infectious laugh that wound me right around her little finger. My daughter sat listening to our conversation and told me later that she’d only heard me get that animated with my mom and sister. That’s what it felt like, too.

Wearing my new sweatshirt today, Teri. Thank you again. Next stop, Portland!

Can’t comment on today’s blog. Just want to say thanks for visiting mine and, please continue to do so. I am all over the map topic-wise. The new baby is great. Her pic is up. Thanks for good wishes.

That vintage photo–feel free to copy. I stole it from cracked.com.
