The View From Out There

One of my favorite writing professors has been on sabbatical in India.  He’s working on a book; his wife goes to her office everyday.  Their latest blog post sent me rolling.  You writers who want your laugh today, click here.

How does your spouse / significant other see what you do?

That’s awesome. I’m freaking out about my deadline and can relate. Tim’s out of town so I will be doing the night shift writing while spending time with the kids during the day (and taking a nap!).

    So thanks for the laugh!

That’s a lot, especially with all that light-saber running around going on. You must feel like Abby, the calm center, getting your work done anyway!

Every day I use a new favorite photo as our wallpaper on the computer. It’s my way of showing him where I’ve been and what I’ve seen. One day I’ll be on the front lines but until then it’s the simple moments that make up a day.

Ha! I love it. Summers are always interesting because my husband is a teacher and is home obviously with us during the summer which is such a gift, but he clearly gets insight into my work habits that he wouldn’t otherwise…

I just had a conversation with a friend this weekend. “But what do you DO all day?” she wanted to know.

I wanted to reply that I stare at blank pages and i want to pull my fingernails out, one by painful one, and that I’m constantly in a panic that my writing will be seen as hurtful, or that I can spend an entire day rewriting one page or even ONE PARAGRAPH.

But then I figured, why bother.

It sure doesn’t add up to much, does it? I guess that’s why I feel compelled to greet S with a hot dinner every night and keep his clothing laundered and neatly folded. If his needs are met he’s less likely to quiz me on my daily accomplishments. If/when the domestic goddess act fails, I can fall back on my old reliable: “I’m alive, aren’t I?? Isn’t that enough?”

You know, he reads the blog every day but never the comments. It’s a weird check-in we have. He has this wonderful way of letting me know that he loves that I’ve met all of you and finally have a writing outlet. He also has told me how much he admires me adding something else to my plate, yet I know he worries as I tend to crash hard.
As for the real writing, as with all of my other schemes (luckily the ultra marathon in Iceland for our honeymoon didn’t pan out), he loves that I’m someone who dreams big. It doesn’t really matter what I’m doing, but that I haven’t given up on there being something amazing out there if I can just reach it.
So, as crazy as I make him with my lack of satisfaction, he knows it goes hand in hand with my big dreams. I don’t think he’d take the trade off. When I’m not dreaming big, I tend to be in a black hole. Now that I think about it, I’m rather manic that way I suppose.

Oh man, that is cold. Yet fabulous. My husband, while not a writer, understands the artistic process and I can’t imagine him saying (or thinking) something like this. Or at least that’s what I tell myself!
