For Whom I’m Praying

Sturbuck Community Church

I regularly receive angry mail from religious leaders chastising me for writing columns about our president. They are most always older white men.

Today I received this note from a local Methodist pastor in my mailbox:

I could assume you are one of the democratic “Trump haters” in which case the president can do nothing that would please you. I am sorry you feel the way you do and that you would consider publishing such a mean piece about our president. I wonder how such a beautiful lady (picture) could have such “bad” thoughts. Why don’t you join many of us in praying for our president.
____________

To all those who write, I say:

Dear Pastor:

In no particular order …

I pray for the handicapped reporter our president mocked from the stage.

I pray for the woman about whom our then 60 yr old president said, “I did try and fuck her. She was married. I moved on her like a bitch, but I couldn’t get there.”

I pray for all of the women about whom the president referred when saying, “When you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. Grab them by the pussy. You can do anything.”

I pray for the gold star parents he smeared, and for all good people who are now threatened and persecuted by hate-groups who now feel emboldened by this president.

I pray for the elderly and uneducated students of Trump University who were sold a scam and lost thousands of dollars in order to line his pockets.

I pray for the refugees escaping persecution whom he insists on barring from the safe harbor of this great country.

I pray for our military troops and generals, as they work for a man who claims he knows more than they do.

I pray for freedom of the press

I pray for the courage of Congress and the survival of our democracy.

And most fervently, I pray for Robert Mueller and his team.

Thank you for writing.

I am a devoted Christian and couldn’t agree with you more on the above. Given however that I endeavor to be a faithful Christian, I also pray for our president. He may not be who I voted for or someone I like, but Jesus said to pray for your enemies.

I am not a believer but I do pray to whatever higher being there might be. I would pray for all you pray for and for peace in the world and for love of fellow humans. Thanks

Teri–it is astounding to me that the pastor found your column “mean”–but has no problems with a man who does and says things every day that destroy the dignity of his office and threaten the welfare of millions of Americans. In addition to your prayer list, I will also pray for that minister and his flock, since what he is “preaching” clearly has little to do with the Gospel of Jesus. And, much against my natural bent, I will also pray for Trump–in hopes that he will someday, by some miracle, manage to stop whining and lying. (And, by the way, your writing has often lifted my spirits over the last year or so. Please ignore the haters–and keep speaking out!).

Great writing Teri. What you stated is so obvious to me that problem I wrestle with is how to understand those that back Trump no matter what. I want to believe that those that voted for Trump are (mostly) not bad or stupid people. But it’s difficult. I find myself annoyed by the media that keeps asking Trump voters what they think–if they’e still backing him–and then taking the answers they get at face value without even gently pointing out just a few facts about Trump’s lies.

Excellent. I’m from Versailles, you’ve just gained a new follower, and I couldn’t agree more. Thank you for standing up for what is right!!

Teri, your heart is big and loving. I wish spiritual leaders, such as the pastor who penned that letter, were half as generous in spirit as you.

As an old white male (79), and as a retired pastor, and as a Methodist, I am aware of the many imperfections of mortal creatures, myself included. Thank you for embodying some of the virtues of humanity.

Thank you for this blog. I was a member of a denomination that leans right, but after actually making friends with people of the LGBT community I began to rethink their interpretation of the scriptures they used to justify their prejudice. I also experienced firsthand prejudice against women clergy, even though I felt led to be a minister of music years ago. Now I’m a member of a predominantly Christian left denomination, the United Church of Christ, in Texas, an oasis in the desert, so to say! I enjoy their inclusivity and involvement in social issues.
I share your prayers expressed in this blog, and I agree with others that we should pray for Trump and for all our government leaders, too, for them to come around to be instruments of God’s love.

Well I am praying that the present USA president is removed from the office he attained through his underhanded treasonous skills. I pray Russia will double cross and expose him. Finally I pray for the pastors and his supporters, that they and their families receive ten times the hurt and pain caused by Trump. Finally, I pray for me and that my prayers will be answered 😁

    Excellent post !

I pray for all of you who have taken a man’s youthful words as if he is that person only. MOST mens’ youthful words are ones you’ve never heard. Your friends were carefully chosen and all the rest ignored. Other instances you cite were from hearsay, and while you don’t want to admit that the mainstream media twists every single word he says, I heard most of what he said on the campaign trail and know how they twist them. As for his stance against immigration, you put on display your utter ignorance about how Europe has been totally destroyed by Muslims. You need one to rape your 12 year old daughter, and one to throw your gay brother off the roof of a public garage, and one to knife your mailman who was innocently walking down the sidewalk in Missouri.

You have not mentioned even one of the multitude of generous acts this President has done throughout his life. I suspect it’s because you wouldn’t hear or read about ANY of them, you are so invested in staying within your little self-righteous bubble. Also you have not mentioned a single campaign promise he has kept, you are so focused on the ones Congress needs to help with. Do you know why they aren’t helping? Of course you don’t. The lobbyists and donors who have made them multi-millionaires are paying them to vote exactly the way they need to in order to become millionaires. Pay attention to Maxine Waters, who lives in a $4 billion mansion an hour away from the poverty-stricken district she has represented for 27 years. Read up on how she “earned” that mansion and how many times she has been sued for corruption.

You, Terri Carter, are one of the poster children who have responsibility for why church membership has steadily declined since a self-righteous clergy fancied themselves better than the rest of the population and eligible to judge everyone else by their own ignorant standards. Ignorance that is so self-willed to protect ones’ identity is an abomination in the site of God, but you wouldn’t know about that because you stand outside ANY words that don’t agree with your own perverted view.

Try to keep this in mind, Donald Trump did not steal your money.
Donald Trump did not raise your taxes.
Donald Trump did not quadruple the price of food.
Trump is not stirring a race war.
Trump did not leave any US soldiers in Benghazi to be slaughtered and desecrated by Muslims.
Trump did not send the US Navy to fight for Syrian Al-Qaeda.
Trump did not arm ISIS and systematically exterminate Christians throughout the Middle East.
    Trump did not betray Israel.
Trump did not provide financing and technology to Iran’s nuclear weapons program.
Trump did not give our military secrets to China.
Trump did not remove our nuclear missile shield in Poland at the behest of Russia.
Trump did not shrivel our military, and betray our veterans.
Trump did not cripple our economy.
Trump did not increase our debt to 20 trillion dollars.
Trump did not ruin our credit, twice.
Trump did not double African American unemployment.
Trump did not increase welfare to a record level for eight years.
Trump did not sign a law making it legal to execute, and imprison Americans.
Trump did not set free all of terrorists in Guantanamo bay.
Trump did not steal your rights, violate US Constitutional law, or commit treason, hundreds of times.
Yet Trump is being ripped apart in the news, non stop.

Barrack Hussein Obama, Hillary Clinton and the other criminals who previously occupied our government, did all of the above without ANYONE calling them out on it, because Obama is BLACK!
The media is the Democratic Party.
Save our culture. Stop listening to the media!!!
